Our dark times reveal that the questions raised by the Frankfurt School authors are still present in contemporary capitalism. Horkheimer and Adorno wrote in the Dialectics of the Enlightenment “what we had set out to do was nothing less than to understand why humanity, instead of entering a truly human state, is sinking into a new genre of barbarism”. A central question for the authors of the Frankfurt School after the end of the Second World War, which in our time is more important than ever.
The global revival and/or emergence of fascism, the increasing of social inequality, injustice, structural and physical violence, the extermination of peoples and cultures, racism, environmental destruction: all are deadly consequences of capitalistic and neoliberal politics worldwide. In this dark age, new questions arise about the ways to think about utopia and social emancipation.
During the workshop an international group of ten scholars connected with the seminar “Subjetividad y Teoría Crítica” (“Subjectivity and Critical Theory”) which takes place in the city of Puebla in Mexico will discuss the potential of Critical Theory not only meant as an analytic tool to study capitalist forms, but also as a possible theoretical frame to imagine a free world, beyond the boundaries shaped by the politics of identity.
